Baby girl needs to sleep at night

Little miss baby girl needs to start sleeping at night and not staying up all night or waking up the minute that her head hits the bed.  We really don't hold her all the time...but she acts like we do!  She has slept 8 hours in one night about 4-5 times, most recently 2 times in a row last week, but then she'll go a couple of weeks not doing it and waking up the minute we lay her down.  My husband thinks we should try CIO method, but I think she's still too young for that.  I have had her cry for a few minutes in her bed when I need to cool down, but other than that, we just try to keep her happy.
She's been staying awake more in the day time, so I keep thinking that she'll sleep better the coming night, but it doesn't happen that way.  I've tried so many ways to do it and I guess she just needs to get used to it.  You'd think that I would remember this part from my 2 older kids, but I don't.  I must have blocked it out.  Anyway, I've been trying to help her stay happy and sleep enough and have 'me' time, but it just doesn't seem to be happening.  I'm sure it will even out soon enough...I'm just ready for that time to arrive.  And I know that I'll miss this stage when she's older, but the lack of sleep is one thing I won't miss.
